We're Pro Jesus

We're pro a lot of things around Paseo del Rey.

We're pro fruit.

We're pro water.

We're pro sex for one woman and one man who are married to each other.

But we're anti-sin.

And the man's rebellion in the garden--where there was lots of fruit, plenty of water, and great sexuality with his wife--his disobedience against his loving, abundantly providing God, messed us all up, big time.

Genesis 3 tells the sad, sad story of the brokenness that came to all of us through the one man's sin. Hiding. Hurling. Insecurity. Fear. Excuse making. Blame shifting. Suffering. Miscarriage. Strife in marriage. Separation from self. Separation from those we love. Separation from God. And exile from His good garden.

All because of the sin of one man.

Paul teaches us the theology:

Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned . . .

Romans 5.12

And I sin, because I was born a sinner. I inherited this dark, sinful, self-serving nature from my great-great-great grandpa Adam.

I know I've sometimes thought this is unfair. Why do I, and why do we, suffer so because of his sin? We weren't even there.

But then I remember, if I would have been there, I would crossed the one line God drew even quicker. If he bit in 10 seconds, I would have bit in 6.

Here are a couple of really good articles by biblical, sharp thinking Christian scholars to help us understand the truths of our fall with Adam.

The first is the longer of the two (but very accessible), and is written by Dr. Wayne Grudem of Phoenix Seminary. This article is from his excellent resource, Systematic Theology,  and deals with this difficult question of how and why do we inherit our sinful nature and guilt from Adam.

And the second is by Dr. J.I. Packer, who writes two short essays in his likewise excellent volume, Concise Theology: A Guide to Historical Christian Beliefs. Here Packer concisely (he keeps the promise of his title!) gives us helpful biblical insights into Satan and The Fall. Great, thought provoking thinking.

And how about some really, really good news?

jesusJust as sin, and then death came to all of us because of one man, Adam (I don't like that); grace, forgiveness and eternal life likewise came to all who believe through one man, Jesus (I really like this!).

Paul says it this great way:

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!

Romans 5.15

We're pro a lot of things around Paseo del Rey.

But way, way, way more than anything, we're really pro Jesus!

You can listen to the first message, Garden Rebellion in our series God's Story, in which we explore the sad story of the revolt in the garden.
