Leo and The Gospel

1

Discovering that someone you love has an incurable and life-limiting disease is hard stuff.

Leo and KatieEven more when he’s the first born son of your daughter and her husband, Katie and Ed. And your only grandson.

Leo.

Two and a half bright years old. Full of curiosity, laughter, selfishness, and energy. A Padres fan, of course! And loved. By pretty much everyone who meets him. Especially his grandma.

Leo has Muscular Dystrophy (MD). He was diagnosed two weeks ago, Monday, April 8.

Some have asked how Katie and Ed became aware that Leo may have something wrong with him. Here’s a brief explanation

In these couple weeks, we’ve learned more about MD than we ever wanted to know. For instance:

We’ve learned there are 9 major different types of MD. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is the most common, and progressive form of MD. This is the type of MD the doctors suspect Leo has. We are praying he doesn’t. We won’t know for sure for perhaps four weeks to several months due to the complexity of the genetic sequencing and/or muscle biopsy. It’s hard to wait.

MD is a degenerative muscle disorder, causing progressive weakening of the muscles of the body.

Most often MD does not affect intellect, personality, or spiritual development. Great.

MD predominately affects boys and men.

You don’t want to get MD. And you don’t want your grandson to get MD.

Our hope is in God. God who formed Leo inside his mom. Leo is fearfully, and wonderfully made, Psalm 139.13-18.

Whatever the genetic tests show, God had not fallen asleep. This too, went through God’s hands before coming to us. He will stay with us. And with Katie and Ed, aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents and great-grandpas. And with Leo.

Our always loving and always strong God will never leave us to face our perils alone.

When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the LORD your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.

Isaiah 43.2-3

This is good news. This is the gospel.
