By the breath of His mouth

By the word of the LORD the heavens were made,
their starry host by the breath of His mouth.

Psalm 33.6

Milky way

(This photograph is a spectacular view of the Milky Way arching over a tranquil lake on the island of Réunion. The bright patch to the left of the image marks the bulge of stars at the heart of our galaxy. However, our view of the centre is blocked by thick clouds of interstellar dust which are clearly visible in this image.)

I’ve sometimes wondered if, as our bibles reveal, our little tennis ball of a planet spinning around the sun, one of the billions of such solar systems in one of the 100’s of billion galaxies, is the only planet Jesus poured out His life for, why did God create such a massively, ginormous, huge universe?

I think He created such a mind-bendingly enormous universe to begin to give us a hint, an inkling, a whisper of how awesome and glorious He is!

In the staggeringly beautiful and humongous universe He created with the breath of His mouth, distance is measured in light years, not inches or miles. A light year is the distance light travels in one year. Since light travels at 186,287.5 miles per second, one light year is 5,878,786,100,000 miles per year! (After the sun, the next closest in our galaxy is Alpha Centauri, 4.24 light years, or a measly 24,925,000,000,000 miles from earth. And that's the nearest star just beyond our neighborhood!)

And all of His known universe is just an incredible hors d'oeuvre, a mouthwatering taste or sip of how incomparably awesome God is.

There is more to come. Much more!

So drink in more of God's glory in these stunning astronomy photos of the year.

They are but amazing hints of how awesome God is.
