"Gut-Wrenching" Compassion

On Sunday, we were sent out on a mission!  Instead of our usual teaching time, we went out into our community in order to observe, listen and pray so that God could teach us to have His heart for spiritually lost people.  If you were not with us on Sunday or for some reason could not go on this mission, it's not too late... take some time to learn from this experience!

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had ["gut-wrenching"] compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. – Matthew 9:35-36

We recommend you start by listening to the brief challenge and instructions we received this past Sunday from Pastor Derek.

Because God wants us to have His heart for lost people, this was our mission:

  1. Before you leave campus, take a moment to pray. Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit, to direct you on this morning’s mission and to give you His heart for people.
  2. Head out! Ideally, to a place familiar to you, somewhere you go often, and where you might see some of the same people again.
  3. Spend time there. Be yourselves. Observe. Listen. Pray. Read Jesus’ prayer in John 17:13-18. Watch. Be available. Discuss.

Here are some ideas as you watch and pray. Ask God:

  • to transform you by the Holy Spirit’s work in your heart and life.
  • to give you His heart (eyes, ears) for people.
  • to grow your compassion for those living without Him.
  • for insight into the lives and needs of those living without Him.
  • to teach, mold, or direct you in some way this morning by the prompting of the Holy Spirit.
  • to help you be ready when He calls you to take action.

When you get there…

Please let us know how it goes!
What did God reveal to you? Did you sense the Holy Spirit speaking to you? Did anything interesting happen? What will you remember?
